It seems to actually be Venice, their birthplace (but the original recipe may have originated in the Middle East). They were introduced to France in 1533 by a chef on the occasion of the wedding between Catherine de' Medici and the future King Henry II of Valois. Their popularity was immediate, so it was urgent to identify them with a specific name: in 1552, François Rabelais, the famous French writer and humanist, decided to call them "macarons" in homage to their Italian origins. The term, of course, derives from "maccheroni."
