It appears that it is actually Venice, their hometown (but the original recipe may come from the Middle East). They were introduced to France in 1533, by a cook, on the occasion of the marriage between Catherine de' Medici and the future King Henry II of Valois. There was an immediate boom in popularity, so it was urgent to identify them with a very specific name: in 1552 François Rabelais, the well-known French writer and humanist, decided that they would be called "macarons" in homage to their Italian origins. The term, of course, derives from “macaroni”
