Nel 1815 una grossa quantità di tabacco, lasciata essiccare al sole estivo della Manifattura di Firenze, venne sorpresa da un violento acquazzone. Non potendo “gettare in Arno” tutta quella quantità di tabacco, si decise di produrre dei sigari da vendere al popolo di Firenze. Fu subito un grande successo: l’acqua, infatti, fece fermentare il tabacco dandogli un gusto del tutto nuovo.
