Taormina by night is a different city. Streetlamp lights cast long shadows across the stones, and Corso Umberto slowly empties, returning the alleyways to their true nature: narrow, steep, and composed of lava-stone staircases and complicit silences. It is the hour when desires emerge from the shadows.
I left the crowd of the final aperitivo to slip into one of these secret passages, and there—seated on a chipped step beneath a dim streetlamp—sits a woman, hunched over and wrapped in dark silk shawls, her fingers stained with cocoa powder. She reads not cards, but the dregs in chocolate cups. A presence—almost a shadow—from which emerge eyes shining with a fierce youthfulness that the night seems to amplify.
