I find myself in the center of Piazza IX Aprile—Taormina’s elegant drawing room—where the black-and-white stone paving resembles a chessboard suspended between the sky and the Ionian Sea. It is sunset, that time of day when the light no longer merely illuminates, but caresses. The sun sinks slowly behind the rooftops, setting the horizon ablaze, and the square transforms into an open-air theater where anything is possible.

Yet the true magic does not come from the sun. Suddenly, a couple from a bygone era appears among the café tables: a towering man and a woman with a 1940s flair. He is dressed in a mandarin-colored tailcoat and a jaunty top hat; she wears a sheath dress adorned with dangling orange embroidery, paired with dainty shoes in the same hue.

The pair begins to dance among the tables, and the man—instead of pulling rabbits from his hat—tosses citrus peels into the air; they dissolve like dust in the wind. Each time a peel touches the ground, reality itself transforms. The light in the square grows even richer and more golden, igniting the building facades in a vibrant, almost edible orange hue.

The air turns into a warm breath—a sharp burst of candied lemon and petitgrain that tickles my nose like a sudden burst of laughter. The heart of the square begins to beat to the rhythm of a floral waltz, as the scent of orange blossom mingles with the brazen colors of the bougainvillea. The illusionist smiles at me, and in that instant, a wave of pure euphoria—a vital, unabashed joy—surges through my chest.
